Two members of the Whistler Cycling Club are dead after a motor vehicle rammed into them on Highway 99 near Pemberton yesterday.

The Mounties suspect the driver was impaired. He's been airlifted to a Vancouver hospital, where he remains under police observation.

A passenger in the driver's vehicle also died in the accident.

Media reports have identified the cyclists as Ross Chafe and Kelly Blunden. They were each very active members with the club.

toss the book--and hard!-- at impaired drivers: whether they be on booze, drugs, or weed...has no place on the roads when driving

I question whether the impairment was to the driver's ABILITY to steer the motor vehicle effectively, or if the impairment was to the driver's JUDGMENT and the collision was in some way the result of a decision to scare or intimidate the cyclists.

Anyone who's cycled BC's highways knows the phenomenon of the on-road taunts and terror perpetrated by a small minority of drivers against cyclists. A cyclist was actually shot up in the interior last season and though the perp wasn't caught, I'd bet that some intoxicants were in the mix. Booze and drugs can do more than limit reflexes, vision and motor skills; they can also bring forth demons.
