       A 62-year-old woman is dead after being struck by a garbage truck in a busy Mount Pleasant intersection this morning.

      The Vancouver Police Department said that the truck was turning right from East Broadway onto Kingsway when it hit a pedestrian crossing the street.

      Police said that the driver is cooperating with investigators.

      Earlier this year, the VPD issued a news release noting that accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists increase from June through September.

      These ugly, stinky, polluting and incredibly dangerous machines, from the 'cutest' mini car to the most gargantuan semi should be tolled in order to drive in the city. The vast overuse of these planet killing and people killing machines has to be curtailed. Talk about terrorism try walking or riding a bike around these massive killing machines. They are intimidating and deadly.

      Amen. I've noticed it is especially bad in the heat, it is a small minority that are not driving half-cocked.

      That we still allow cars to be driven without some sort of active capture technology is ridiculous. Diesel is a carcinogen, petrol likely is too. Why are unhealthy people allowed to poison the healthy for the sake of convenience? I know some healthy people drive, but by and large driving is an unhealthy lifestyle. People used to walk dozens of km a day. Can anyone rational say we're better off with industrial pollution, industrial jobs and no time to walk?

      The first two comments are wonderful stuff from folks who have obviously lived in a very privelaged bubble in the western world. Angry first world folks demanding changes they will never live to see. Imagine if you had to worry about basics like sanitation and a water supply: you wouldn't be bitching you'd be too busy trying to survive. If you really want to take a stand against the "terrorism of automobiles powered by internal combustion" then cease consuming any and all products that utilize that mode of transportation. Reduce e demand and they will disappear but you can't reduce demand without convincing people to sacrifice and that just isn't going to happen. Keep whining tho: your impotent anger oils my minor irritations with first world living.

      @LMAO

      Google "vehicle miles travelled per capita"

      Driving has been in steady decline since about 2005, all over the western world. Young people aren't even getting drivers licenses. You're living in the past.

      LMAO - STFU.

      As a Mount Pleasant resident, I'm surprised there aren't more pedestrians killed as people driving through the neighborhood have no clue as to what TRAFFIC CALMING means. The roundabouts, speed bumps and stop signs are there for reasons other than for you to ignore them.

      Repeatedly I see drivers ignoring the posted 30 km/h speed limit, running stop signs, making left turns at roundabouts without negotiating them properly and running down cyclists on 6th Avenue, despite the fact the street is a DESIGNATED BIKEWAY.

      Safe driving - it's not just for major arterial streets...
