Vancouver police say 15-year-old Jason Nguyen has become city's ninth homicide of the year
Vancouver police have identified Jason Nguyen as the East Vancouver teenager who was murdered on Sunday (July 27).
"He was rushed to hospital, underwent surgery, but unfortunately died on the operating table," Const. Brian Montague told reporters today.
He revealed that Nguyen was found by a family member suffering from severe injuries in his residence on East 24th Avenue near Rupert Street. Paramedics and police were called to the home just before 3 p.m.
"It's very, very tragic when we have someone this young die in this manner," Montague said.
Nguyen is the ninth person murdered in Vancouver this year. He was initially reported to be 16 years old, but Montague said that he was only 15.
"There is no indication that the family are involved in the death," he said.
The Vancouver police media liaison emphasized that it did "not appear to be a random attack". He also said that police don't believe the public is at any risk.
An autopsy is scheduled on Tuesday (July 28) and police are not revealing any information about the cause of death or any suspects.
When asked if the injuries resulted from a home invasion, Montague replied: "We're looking into a number of possibilities. Obviously there are a number of theories."
Montague said that based on his brief examination of police files, he wouldn't describe the murder victim as a "person known to police".
"We're working on a suspect profile," Montague said. "It's obviously very, very early on to provide any information publicly. We're hoping that a witness canvass and a video canvass will assist in that."
Montague said that he didn't know if Nguyen was enrolled in a Vancouver secondary school, telling reporters that this information would have to come from the local school district.
