Justin Trudeau: Bring Mohamed Fahmy home, Stephen Harper

    1 of 1 2 of 1

Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau issued the following open letter today (July 28) regarding Canadian journalist Mohamed Fahmy’s retrial in Egypt:

      Dear Prime Minister,

I am writing you today regarding the upcoming verdict on Mohamed Fahmy’s re-trial, set for July 30th, which continues to be of great concern to Canadians.

As you know, a Canadian citizen has been unjustly imprisoned in Egypt as a result of an arbitrary process. The Government of Canada has an obligation to protect and assist Canadian citizens facing grim and appalling conditions, such as those faced by Mr. Fahmy during his extensive imprisonment.

I urge you once again to do everything in your power to ensure Mr. Fahmy returns to Canada as quickly as possible, once the verdict of his re-trial is rendered. Media reports claim that your government has agreed to authorize both a deportation and a pardon request prepared by Mr. Fahmy’s lawyers in the event he is ordered back to prison. We have already seen how effective discussions between Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott led to the release of Australian citizen Peter Greste. It is time for you to publicly demand Mr. Fahmy’s release, and let both Canadians and Egyptians know that Mr. Fahmy has the support of his government.

I, and the entire Liberal Caucus, believe that all Canadians are equal, and deserve their government’s support when they are unjustly imprisoned abroad. Mr. Fahmy, who was simply carrying out his journalistic duties, deserves no less support from you and your government.

I look forward to your prompt reply and attention to this matter.

      Sincerely,

      Justin P.J. Trudeau
      Member of Parliament for Papineau
Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada

Every other Western Country like the UK & Australia support & demand that their Citizens be sent back home regardless of any conviction or not.

In this particular case the Australian involved was released back to Australia after the Australian PM intervened and Called the Egyptian Government (which is a third world Kangaroo/Political Court & highly Corrupt Country with huge record of gross Human Rights Abuses).

Australian In Case set Free due to Australian PM Calling Egypt President.

Peter Greste's was released from jail and deported from Egypt.

Greste travelled to Cyprus after being set free overnight by order of Egypt's president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, under a new law allowing foreign prisoners to be deported.

Fahmy is no longer a Egyptian Citizen having under duress signed legal documents renouncing his Egyptian Citizenship.

Fahmy is now only a Canadian Citizen.

However unless the Government of Canada at the highest levels lobby and support their Citizens abroad and repatriate them regardless of any Courts Ruling of Guilt as per Prisoner Transfer Treaties worldwide Canadians will be stuck and at the mercy of any corrupt regime anywhere.

This effects all Canadians. Regardless if you travel or not.

Any Country can extradite any Canadian simply by charging any Canadian with any crime as long as it matches a Canadian Criminal Code violation.

We are all subject to any third world jail.

Communist China routinely uses this easy access to Canadians and their dual nationals living here for political purposes to extradite Canadians to kangaroo courts there.

As do other Countries with dismal legal and Human Rights records as in this case.

Unless Canadian Governments and Senior Politicians like the PM step up and without reservation demand other Countries return Canadians to Canada we are all subject to this kind of Political Kangaroo Court Human Rights Violations.

All other civilised Countries demand the return of their Citizens, the UK, Australia etc.

Canada under this Regime / Dictatorship caused by the outdated Westminster Parliamentary system is the ONLY EXCEPTION!

Top Ten Reasons CONS Don't Call Egypt

      Jul 28, 2015 at 2:50pm

Top Ten Reasons why Con-servatives don't Call Egypt to Release Canadians.

      10. They don't know how to call long distance out of Alberta,

      9. They don't have cell coverage in rural Alberta where most of them live,

      8. Budget cut backs due to record deficits cancelled phone lines at official residence in Ottawa,

      7. They can't research the phone number due to cuts in R&D in Canada,

      6. They don't know how to use Google,

      5. They don't know that there is a Country called Egypt as they can't see it from Alberta,

      4. They think all Canadians look like them any one else is a TFW (Temporary Foreign Worker),

      3. They thought he was Mexican and talked to the Mexican Embassy in Ottawa,

      2. They think that he is a radical since he works for a news organization other than Sun Media,

      1. They don't believe in the Charter of Rights & Freedoms and/or the Canadian Constitution (Bill C51) everyone other than them should be in Jail (tough on unreported Crimes Agenda)!

      Oh Canada

To me this appears arbitrary and discriminatory.

Contrast this with the Paid (ransom money) as widely reported in the media for a Canadian(s).

Not even a simple phone call.

If your a White Canadian they pay for your release if your dark skinned your Shit Out of Luck.

" Egyptian Government (which is a third world Kangaroo/Political Court & highly Corrupt Country with huge record of gross Human Rights Abuses)."

Kind of like the "Human Rights Tribunals" here! Not really that different after all.

Good golly. Justin's writing a plaintive letter as if he's Francine from Saskatoon. He's the leader of a major party. Speak up. Might as well send a tweet!
      What a joke.

As usual, Justin isn't stopping to think through the implications. Presumably, it is Canada's position to encourage Egypt's growth as a democracy, flawed though it currently is. What message is Canada sending, then, if it tells Egypt that its laws and courts are silly and do not apply to people from "real" democracies? How would we feel if American citizens were able to commit crimes in Canada and remain unpunished, because they're Americans and their justice system is different from ours?

We expect our fellow Canadians to observe local laws when they travel, and that a Canadian passport is not a "get out of jail free" card. And if a "developing" foreign justice system should envelope a Canadian, Canada should work carefully and diplomatically to redress wrongs. However, publicly braying, as Justin does, that a foreign form of justice is a joke is more likely to harden positions than help. In future, Justin should talk less, and listen more, to his senior MPs -- most of whom are much wiser than he.

Why are our elected representatives NOT representative?
      Why all the secrets?
Why do we continue to allow ourselves to be insulted with the 'Free and Democractic' lie?

Once again let's jump on Justin for doing the right thing...he knows Harper is useless and will not help this man but all you cons who think of Harper as a great leader still have your heads in the sand...you're going to smother in it soon !!!!!

The PM should should follow the precedent of Jimmy Carter in Iran .and send in the Marines (or in Canada's case the Special Forces).

Mohamed Fahmy in addition to being Canadian is a duel citizen and is also Egyptian. This makes his situation more complicated and leads to the following questions. Should the Canadian government return Canadians with dual citizenship facing charges in the country to avoid charges in this country because they also happen to be a citizen of another country? Do we want the courts in any country to remain independent or should they bow to outside political pressure? Are the courts in Egypt bowing to political pressure from their own government?

      Not

At the commentator or anyone else who thinks this guy is a Dual Citizen.

He is NOT a Dual Citizen.

He renounced his Egyptian Citizenship earlier this year sometime in February.

He is ONLY a Canadian Citizen currently.

And all Courts in all Countries are Political, who do you think appoints Judges? God?

Politicians appoint Judges in Canada and Canadian Courts a very Political.

This is a Political case with the poor Journalist as meat in the sandwich between the current regime in Egypt and his Employer who are owned by another Gulf State.

It's all Politics it is naive to think that Courts and Judges are pure in any Country and/or not at all political, that's bull shit.
