Chelsea Manning, tax havens, and Obama’s war on whistleblowers top Project Censored 2012-13

    1 of 1 2 of 1

Today (October 3) Project Censored published its annual list of the year’s most underreported news stories.

Some of the top picks for 2012-13 are a bit of a departure from those included in previous years’ selections. Historically, Project Censored has focused more on issues deserving of exposure that didn’t receive it. This year, it also chose to highlight some topics that did receive attention from the mainstream media, but were given unfair or otherwise poor coverage.

For example, Project Censored’s number-one pick for 2012-13 is the case of Chelsea Manning (born Bradley Manning).

Explaining why the former U.S. military intelligence analyst is at the top of its list, the group’s website states: “When corporate media have focused on Manning, this coverage has often emphasized his sexual orientation and past life, rather than his First Amendment rights or the abusive nature of his imprisonment, which includes almost three years without trial and nearly one year in “administrative segregation,” the military equivalent of solitary.”

Other stores included in the top 25 are of significant importance but truly received scant attention from mainstream American media outlets.

Coming in at number 20, for example, is evidence that for four years, Israel decided how much food to allow into the Gaza Strip based on calculations for how many calories a human needs to survive. And at number 12, that the U.S. military’s use of depleted uranium and other toxic substances during its invasion and occupation of Iraq has left the country with an epidemic of cancers and birth defects.

Here’s Project Censored’s 2012-13 list of the top 25 stores ignored, misrepresented, or censored by the mainstream media:

      25. Israel Gave Birth Control to Ethiopian Immigrants Without Their Consent

      2. HSBC with the drug & gun running. By far even quieter than the "Iran-Contra" & AirAmerica. The Senate panel slap on the wrist. Ooouuuccchhh....

      1. The "BP-Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill". We didn't even get a "body-language expert" to tell us if they were lying. Basically one of the best media blackouts ever. Including my alternative sites, which now makes me question them. The payouts must have been amazing.

      Society's "Eyes Wide Shut"

We are experiencing a very scary time in history and most can't see it or should I say don't want to see it.

Shame on the journalists for not properly investigating the worldwide horrors and crime's going on, or sacrificing their careers to force spotlight on issues if required.

      1. The obvious worldwide conspiracy going on to secretly shove "Smart Meters" down the publics throats b4 they can actually learn how harmful they are. These idiot meters provide ZERO benefits, cost an unbelievable amount of money to buy and install, have been mostly paid for with "bribery" money (also called "stimulus money"), and have been PROVEN beyond a doubt that they are harmful, a fire risk, and an absolute invasion of privacy. A President gets a BJ from an intern and the media is all over it for a year and a half and even today you still hear the jokes. But an issue filled with corruption, laws being bent, broken and even changed to accommodate the program, and tremendous public harm - and still nothing.

      2. Because of the worldwide invasion of the idiot meters, a bright light has been shone on whole radio/microwave frequency radiation issue. With experts all over the world, including Nobel Prize winning scientists screaming about the damage caused by cell phones, cell towers, wifi (now in schools), cordless phones, baby monitors, and especially smart meters, it amazes me how little coverage the media has given it. Communications companies do spend a lot of $$ on advertising, so I guess it makes sense. Proof has been there since 1960's. I've read over 100 studies, and there is no doubt of the negative biological effects to our cells. This radiation has caused spikes in Autism (now 1/50 kids born), ADHD, depression, anxiety, insomnia, and many other illnesses. Now recognized in Europe but not by our doctors. Even ex Norway Prime Minister and WHO director has admitted to being electromagnetic sensitive. But no media coverage. This is killing us MORE than tobacco, the cover up has been bigger than tobacco, and still no media coverage.

Not surprised though. If US gov't put in writing 9 months b4 9-11 that they need "pearl harbor event" to help them get in middleeast, military grade thermite is found in demolished bldg's that came down at speed of gravity, & piles of evidence show gov't involvement, yet NO MEDIA pushing issue ever - then why would journalists start NOW?

      Wake up and do something

Shouldn't journalists, like Straight.com, push those "censored" stories even more then? The harder the gov't/Corporate CEO's try to censor an issue, the harder journalists are suppose to work at exposing the issues. Or at least that's how it use to work. Perhaps with corporations now owning every news station and owing politicians (therefore owning CBC), then how an issue affects a corporations bottom line will determine if the media cover it and inform the public or not. The journalists need to unite and hold their management accountable if a story is trashed because of concern with advertisers. And journalists can then unite WITH mgmt. if corporate CEO's /gov't target mgmt. It is within the journalists and their mgmt.'s power to insure honest reporting on important issues. If those at top are corrupt and attempt to divide and conquer you guys, then as long as you continue to stick together you can fight back and make those issues even bigger and cost them more.

Once mgmt. and then the journalists themselves buy into the corrupt control of information, then the public as a whole (including your families) are at risk and in many cases harmed. You are our last line of defence for truth.
