Campers flee Wood Lake fire north of Harrison Hot Springs

The B.C. Wildfire Service says a fire burning near Harrison Hot Springs is suspected to be human-caused.

There are 70 firefighters and four helicopters fighting the 45-hectare blaze on the west side of Harrison Lake.

Nobody was in any immediate danger, but the RCMP took the precaution of evacuating campers from the Wood Lake Recreation and the 20 Mile Bay campsites.

It came after wind on Sunday (August 2) caused the flames to spread.

The fire is 20 kilomtres north of Harrison Hot Springs and it's zero-percent contained. Flames are spreading away from the resort community, which is 90 minutes east of Vancouver by car.

The West Harrison Lake Forest Service Road has been closed at the 15-kilometre mark.

This YouTube video shows some of the damage.

It amazes me that this was likely caused by a cigarette.
People are still tragically stupid and uncaring.

It's a shame Gordon Campbell allowed the BC Junior Forest Wardens - http://jfwa.ca/index.php/about/history - to disband simply because the demand was not large enough. It deserved government support, and probably could have flourished with as little as $200,000 a year.

I was a member of the Ioco branch in my teens and earned my silver tree. We traipsed about the woods, learned to identify trees and animal tracks, and camped in summer and the middle of winter. It was an excellent education.

The BC Junior Forest Warden program is a worthwhile project and deserves to be brought back.

Junior Forest Wardens/Rangers is still alive in Alberta. I was interested in having my son join only to find they don't exist in this province.
