Joy Davies out as Liberal candidate in South Surrey-White Rock over marijuana comments on Facebook

Facebook comments touting the benefits of marijuana have torched the federal-election hopes of Joy Davies in South Surrey-White Rock.

Today (September 10), Davies quit as the Liberal candidate in the B.C. riding after party leader Justin Trudeau rejected her two-year-old remarks.

"After much consideration, I have decided to resign as the Liberal candidate for South Surrey – White Rock, effective immediately. I believe in the work that the Liberal team is doing and my personal opinion and past comments should not distract from what is most important right now – ensuring all Canadians receive the real change and new leadership they deserve," Davies said in a statement.

CBC News reported: "In 2013, Davies commented on Facebook that marijuana reduces family violence and that growing it in a home poses no harm to children. She also wrote that the Canadian Cancer Society is 'another outlet for big pharma.'"

Trudeau has promised to legalize marijuana if the Liberals form the government after the October 19 election.

“The Liberal party took the position we have to control and regulate marijuana primarily for one reason – Mr. Harper’s current approach is not protecting our children,” Trudeau said in Vancouver, according to the Globe and Mail.

One commenter on Davies's resignation post on Facebook offered this assessment of the situation: "Someone expressed their true beliefs. Get rid of that candidate. We must ensure the public has only bullshitters to choose from."

The Liberals plan to pick a new candidate to replace Davies.

Candidates in the riding include Pixie Hobby of the NDP, former Surrey mayor Dianne Watts for the Conservatives, and Larry Colero of the Greens.

Because anyone who thinks that the Canadian Cancer Society is just pimping drugs for big pharma is delusional.
