The  B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union is recommending its members accept tentative five-year deals involving 51,000 members.

In a news release, the union has announced agreements with two bargaining associations concerning 25,000 B.C. government workers, 15,000 community-health workers, and 11,000 community-social-services workers.

The agreements include wage increases in four of the five years, market adjustments, and language concerning job security.

There are also provisions for higher wages in years when the provincial economy grows beyond projections.

It's the first time this has been negotiated in a collective agreement with B.C. government workers.

"We entered into negotiations seeking fair and reasonable wage increases, market adjustments and job security for our members,” BCGEU president Darryl Walker said in the news release. “In these uncertain economic times these tentative agreements are an investment in public services in our province and the women and men who deliver them.”
