The mayor of Vancouver has unveiled a new way to get businesses more involved in saving the planet.

Today, he launched Vancouver's Climate Pledge while attending Climate Week NYC in New York City.

Ten companies and organizations have already signed the pledge.

They are Telus, Mountain Equipment Co-op, Hootsuite, Vancity, Lush Fresh Handmade Cosmetics, Solegear Bioplastic Technologies, Hydra Energy, Brinkman Climate, East Side Games, and the Vancouver Aquarium.

According to a news release from the mayor's office, the pledge "provides a formal way for Vancouver businesses to get behind the call for stronger action on climate change globally".

It also offers the option for businesses to support Vancouver's vision to shift to 100 percent renewable energy.

In addition, the signatories have an option to declare their own corporate carbon reduction and renewable energy targets.

It's part of the mayor's plan to build awareness in the months leading up to a crucial United Nations conference on climate change in Paris later this year.

"By signing this pledge, Vancouver companies are voicing their support for stronger action on climate change from governments around the world, and being recognized as green economy leaders," the Climate Pledge website states.
