(The Vancouver Whitecaps FC issued the following statement in response to an article about a banner being unfurled at B.C. Place as the team was playing NYC FC.)

We appreciate the sentiment and good intentions behind this banner. It is not about whether we agree or disagree with the content of a banner, but whether our matches are the appropriate venue for such expression.

We are first and foremost interested in providing an exceptional fan experience, which is why all banners are required to go through the appropriate approval process. Our published guidelines clearly state that banners and flags are for fans to show their support for the club and that unapproved signs will be confiscated.

The four-metre banner in question was taken down, stored, and returned to the group post match.

The ejection of the three guests was due to inappropriate behaviour and fan misconduct and was not related to the banner.
