Douglas Coupland named to the Order of Canada
The author of Microserfs and Generation X is one of 90 people newly appointed to the Order of Canada.
Governor General David Johnston announced today (December 30) that West Vancouver writer and artist Douglas Coupland has been named an officer of the order, which is one of the country's highest civilian honours.
Coupland's citation referenced "his contributions to our examination of the contemporary human condition as a novelist, cultural commentator and artist".
From Vancouver, distance-education advocate John Daniel, UBC English professor Sherrill E. Grace, and opera singer Nancy Hermiston have also been appointed as officers in the order.
Meanwhile, Emily Carr University president Ron Burnett and philanthropist Djavad Mowafaghian (both from Vancouver), and Conair Aviation CEO K. Barry Marsden (of West Vancouver) are the newest local members of the order.
Other notable appointees include actor and filmmaker Sarah Polley and fashion journalist Jeanne Beker, both from Toronto.

Douglas Coupland is one of the most overrated authors of the current generation.
