Vancouver police officers are looking for a man believed to be behind a string of violent purse snatchings in Chinatown.

The person of interest is said to have robbed elderly Asian women in four separate incidents between October 28 and November 1.

One was a 91-year-old woman, who was walking in the 500 block of Main Street when she was approached from behind around 5:30 p.m. on October 31. The man grabbed her purse, knocking her down. She suffered a knee injury, and was taken to the hospital.

Fifteen minutes later, an 81-year-old woman was also approached from behind and robbed as she was walking in the 600 block of Jackson Street.

The first incident happened on October 28. According to the Vancouver Police Department, an 80-year-old woman was walking in the 200 block of East Pender Street around 5 p.m. when a man came up behind her, pushed her to the ground, and ran off with her purse. She suffered a knee injury, and was treated by responding paramedics.

The fourth robbery took place on November 1. A 59-year-old woman was walking in the area of Gore and East Cordova Street around 5 p.m. when a man approached from behind, pushed her, and ripped her purse from her shoulder. The victim was not injured.

“These are cowardly acts committed against vulnerable members of our community,” Sgt. Randy Fincham, spokesperson of the Vancouver Police Department, said in a media release. “These women are someone’s mother and grandmother, who should be able to go about their day, without fear of being attacked.”

The suspect was described as white, in his 20s, six-feet tall, and has with a slim build.
