Vancouver police have apprehended a man suspected in a string of purse snatchings that occurred in the Downtown Eastside this week.

“For the past 24 hours, undercover officers have swarmed Vancouver’s Chinatown after police received five reports of a purse snatcher targeting older Asian women,” reads an October 3 media release. “Around 3 p.m., police spotted a man as he robbed an 85 year-old woman at Gore Avenue and Keefer Street. The woman suffered minor injuries after being pushed to the ground.

As he fled, police followed him to the 200 block of East Pender Street where he was taken into custody.”

So far the Vancouver Police Department has not revealed the man’s identity but describes him as a 28-year-old resident of Surrey.

He faces charges related to the sixth incident while the previous five remain under investigation.
