The University of Toronto has named outgoing UBC president Stephen Toope as its new director of the Munk School of Global Affairs.

Toope announced his early resignation from UBC in April 2013 and said then that he wished to pursue other academic and professional interests.

According to a University of Toronto media release, the former law professor will take his new position as the head of the prestigious Munk School in January 2015. He will take over for Janice Stein, who has led the organization since 2000.

“The Munk School has built a reputation around the world for its thoughtful and insightful examination of international issues,” said Toope, quoted in that release. “I look forward to joining its outstanding researchers and students in working to understand and tackle global problems.”

Toope, once the dean of the McGill University law faculty, proved an impressive fundraiser for UBC. During his tenure, the university also consistently ranked among the top educational institutions in the world.

The University of Toronto media release notes that in recent years, Toope has focused on research in fields of international law including continuity and change, and the origins of international obligation.

Toope became the president of UBC in 2006 and will continue with that role until the end of June 2014.

“The months ahead will be important on so many crucial issues for UBC,” he said. “My entire focus will be on UBC until the end of my term.”
