Why Vancouver residents should care that octogenarian Rupert Murdoch is marrying Mick Jagger's former wife

When I heard that the billionaire media mogul Rupert Murdoch is going to marry Jerry Hall, I rolled my eyes.

"This has absolutely nothing to do with Vancouver," I thought.

Hall is the jet-setting former wife of Mick Jagger. Murdoch doesn't own any newspapers in Canada and his FOX News network isn't blasted into my living room.

But then I read this piece on the Thinkprogress.org website.

In "Rupert Murdoch Is Marrying A Climate Hawk", Joe Romm writes that Hall has been an outspoken advocate for taking action on global warming.

In 2009, the model and actor wrote an open letter to then U.K. prime minister Gordon Brown declaring that "climate change is the biggest threat the world has ever seen".

Murdoch, on the other hand, has consistently promoted the denialist message through his publications and U.S. news network.

Rolling Stone magazine even included Murdoch as one of the planet's "worst enemies".

So will a little pillow talk convince Murdoch to change his tune?

Has Hall made the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of Mother Earth by cozying up to a man who gives a platform to nutty deniers admired by those dastardly Koch brothers?

If Hall manages to turn Murdoch's thinking around, then maybe, just maybe, this is a story of interest to Vancouver residents.

It certainly beats Hugh Hefner getting engaged to another 25-year-old.
