Vancouver residents to get new grey recycling box for glass collection

Vancouver residents will start to get a new recycling box starting this month.

The grey box will be a special container for recycling glass bottles and jars, which will be collected separately from plastic, metal, and paper containers.

Glass can break easily during collection, and when broken glass bits mix with other materials, it becomes difficult to ensure an uncontaminated recycling process.

The new container will allow for more glass and other materials to be properly recycled.

The City of Vancouver is encouraging residents to place glass bottles and jars into the grey box as soon as it arrives. Other glass containers, such as wine, spirits, coolers, beer, and juice bottles, should be brought to a return-it depot for refund.

The delivery of the new recycling box to single-family homes will take place between January and April. For multi-unit buildings serviced by the city, delivery of a new recycling cart for glass bottles and jars started in October 2015 and will continue into July 2016.

The grey boxes will be collected weekly with residents' blue box, yellow bags, and green bin.
