Shaw Communications Inc. plans to layoff about 400 employees as it moves to consolidate business units.

The Calgary-based communications and media company announced today (April 14) that it will shed hundreds of "management and non-customer facing" jobs while hiring more than 100 people in support of its restructuring.

"The roles and structure we established years ago to support us as a cable company can no longer support our growth," Brad Shaw, CEO of Shaw Communications, said in a news release. "We are eliminating duplication of work and organizing our activities and operations in a way that best meets the needs of our customers and viewers."

Shaw Communications will fold its residential cable, satellite, Internet, and home phone services into a new consumer unit. Meanwhile, a new business unit will house Shaw's enterprise services, which include cable, telephony, satellite, and tracking. The company has also consolidated its engineering and IT staffs into a single technology and network operations team.

Shaw Media, which includes Global TV, will remain a separate unit.

On April 10, Shaw Communications reported consolidated revenue of $1.27 billion for the quarter ended February 28, up two percent from the same period last year.

Shaw Communications' Class B nonvoting shares (SJR.B) closed today at $26.35 on the TSX, up 0.73 percent.
