Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in today's provincial by-elections in Vancouver–Mount Pleasant and Coquitlam–Burke Mountain.

The candidates in Vancouver–Mount Pleasant are: Gavin Dew (B.C. Liberal), Pete Fry (Green), Jeremy Gustafson (YPP), Bonnie Boya Hu (Libertarian), and Melanie Mark (NDP).

In Coquitlam–Burke Mountain, the candidates are: Paul Geddes (Libertarian), Joan Isaacs (B.C. Liberal), Joe Keithley (Green), and Jodie Wickens (NDP).

If anyone in those constituencies receives a call today from anyone claiming to be from Elections B.C., don't believe that the person on the other end of the line is telling the truth.

That's because provincial election regulator says on its website that it's "important for B.C. voters to know" that it does not use the telephone to communicate with voters.

In 2011, a Conservative claiming to be from Elections Canada called voters on election day to send them to the wrong polling location.

Under the provincial Elections Act, interfering with a person's right to vote carries a fine of up to $20,000 and a maximum prison sentence of up to two years.

Anyone who votes must prove their identity and residential address.

Option 1 involves showing one document issued by the B.C. or federal government that includes a photograph and residential address. This includes a driver's licence, a B.C. identification card, or a B.C. services card.

Option 2 involves presenting a certificate of Indian status from the federal government.

Option 3 involves presenting two documents together that show the voter's name and residential address. One must include the address and both must include the name.
