Vancouver–Point Grey MLA David Eby has deflected a barb from Finance Minister Mike de Jong over the disposition of a property owned by the Official Opposition.

Speaking in the legislature yesterday, Eby said that his party sold the building at 5387 Kingsway to a local business owner of Taiwanese descent.

"If the minister has a problem with that, he should bring it up with the local business owner in Burnaby," Eby said.

The NDP MLA told the Straight that the owner of the Best Western Hotel Plus Kings Inn and Conference Centre would like to expand his business, which will create more employment in Burnaby. And the party made the decision to sell to him.

He added that the NDP is not opposed to non-Canadians buying real estate—and in fact, many residents are landed immigrants who don't have citizenship.

Eby emphasized that the party's position is that all taxes should be collected on transactions, whether they involve Canadian or foreign buyers.

The purchase of the NDP building was financed by a Schedule II Canadian bank with a head office in Taiwan.
