NPA councillor George Affleck explains why he's not running for mayor

Non-Partisan Association councillor George Affleck says he decided about a month ago not to throw his hat in the ring as an NPA mayoral candidate.

“I pulled my name out of the potential running several weeks ago,” he told the Straight by phone.

Affleck, who was one of two NPA councillors elected in the 2011 municipal election, said the board asked him if he would be interested in being part of a group of mayoral candidates who had submitted their names.

“I have to make sure I have a balance,” he said. “I have a young family, I’ve got a kid in kindergarten, and I have a business, so for me I have to have a balanced life...I decided that this wasn’t the right time for me.”

He added that it does interest him to run for mayor in the future. But for now, he’s planning to run for reelection as a city councillor.

“A great team are coming together here,” he said. “The three candidates that have submitted to run for mayor are fantastic, high quality, happy to be a part of their team absolutely, and the other candidates…many that I have met are really impressive.”

Affleck said he has met at least 12 potential city council candidates. He expects the party to announce its council slate and its mayoral candidate, who he noted has been chosen by the NPA board as part of a secret ballot process, within the next two weeks.

The NPA has been hosting policy forums around the city that the party says will help shape its platform for the 2014 election. Affleck expects the platform will be released publicly in the fall.

The election will take place on November 15.
