Integrity B.C. objects to corporations covering the tab for B.C. Liberal diners

A nonprofit watchdog group has called on the B.C. Liberals to stop having corporations sponsor fundraising events.

Integrity B.C. has claimed that Belkorp Environmental Services and Capital Power paid for free meals for B.C. Liberal members at a John Les Appreciation Dinner.

Les, a former B.C. Liberal cabinet minister who represented Chilliwack in the legislature, later became a lobbyist for Belkorp.

"Athletes are sponsored," Integrity B.C. executive director Dermod Travis said in a June 8 news release. "Cultural groups are sponsored. Political parties should not be sponsored, whether it's by a corporation or a union."

Belkorp stands to lose a great deal of revenue from its waste-disposal site in Cache Creek if Metro Vancouver proceeds with a plan to incinerate up to 500,000 tonnes of garbage per year.

The greatest opposition to Metro Vancouver's plan has come from the Fraser Valley, where local politicians have been complaining about the potential impact on their air quality.

Capital Power is an Alberta-based power producer behind the Quality Wind project near Tumbler Ridge, B.C. It sells electricity to B.C. Hydro.

It's very telling that this group didn't call for the ndp and other parties to stop having corporations sponsor fundraising events. Just a faceless organization set up to bash the liberals. And yes, the liberals suck, but so do the ndp. Sorry, but Integrity B.C. has no integrity.

Last paragraph of our news release:

"IntegrityBC is calling on all B.C. political parties to end the practice of allowing corporations or unions to sponsor their fundraisers and to proactively disclose the names of all those who attend their events."

I guess the sponsors will have to give cash under the table, the way they did in the past.
