Magnitude 5.0 earthquake detected west of Vancouver Island

      A magnitude 5.0 earthquake has been detected off the west coast of Vancouver Island.

      According to Natural Resources Canada, the event occurred 216 kilometres southwest of Port Alice at a depth of 10 kilometres. That's 506 kilometres west of the City of Vancouver. The exact time of the quake was 3:45 p.m.

      (The U.S. Geological Survey measured the earthquake at magnitude 5.2.)

      It was not felt on the mainland or on the island and no tsunami is expected.
