The Vancouver Canucks won their final game in what's been a very disappointing season.

It came in a dramatic seven-round shootout at Rogers Arena against the Pacific Division basement-dwelling Edmonton Oilers.

Emerson Etem scored the winner after earlier shootout goals by Alex Burrows and Jake Virtanen on the team's fan appreciation night.

Canucks goalie Jacob Markstrom was beaten in the shootout by Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Leon Draisaitl but was still good enough to get the win.

The 4-3 victory leaves the Canucks with a 31-38-13 record, which was good for 75 points. Only the Toronto Maple Leafs and Oilers scored fewer points in the 2015-16 season.

Canucks forward Derek Dorsett opened the scoring midway through the first period with his fifth goal of the year.

Edmonton tied the game at 13:46 in the second frame on a goal by Darnell Nurse.

Things opened up in the third period with each team scoring twice.

Etem and Jannik Hansen were the Canucks marksmen. Nugent-Hopkins and Patrick Maroon scored for the Oilers, with the latter goal coming on a power-play at 18:33 of the third period.

Over the season, the Canucks scored the second-fewest number of goals in the NHL and had the largest gap between goals scored and goals against.

It turned out to be the Canucks' worst season since the infamous 1998-99 season, which resulted in the firing of head coach and general manager Mike Keenan.

No Canadian team made the NHL playoffs this year.
