Vancouver school district cancels summer school in response to teachers strike

Vancouver has become the latest school district to choose not to offer summer courses and programs.

In a news release issued this afternoon (July 2), superintendent Steve Cardwell said that summer school can't proceed "without teaching and support staff, due to the prospect of picket lines at our school sites".

"We continue to urge both parties to reach a negotiated settlement at the bargaining table so that school in September will not be impacted by job action," Cardwell stated.

The Labour Relations Board had earlier issued a rulling that remedial summer school must be offered to students who need a course credit to graduate.

Vancouver school district officials have determined that no students meet this requirement.

Until this decision was made, Vision Vancouver board of education chair Patti Bacchus was usually quoted on how the district might respond to the strike.

But when the decision was made to cancel summer school, it was the senior staff person, Cardwell, whose name appeared on the news release.

Bacchus is seeking reelection to the board of education in November. In the 2011 election, she received 72,027 votes.

Only Mayor Gregor Robertson received more support at the ballot box, collecting 77,005 votes.

The next highest total among all the Vision council, park board, and board of education candidates went to trustee Mike Lombardi.

He received 65,413 votes. Behind him was park commissioner Constance Barnes at 63,951, followed by Coun. Raymond Louie at 63,273.
