The RCMP has announced that 31 charges have been laid against suspended senator Mike Duffy.

Duffy, a former CTV and CBC broadcaster, has been accused of one count of fraud over $5,000 and one count of breach of trust in relation to expense claims filed over his residency.

Duffy was kicked out of the Conservative caucus after a scandal came to light over his expense accounts. In the past, he helped the Conservatives by appearing at numerous fundraising events.

The suspended senator's lawyer, Donald Bayne, has insisted that his client is not guilty of committing any crimes.

Duffy also faces one count each of bribery of a judicial officer, fraud on the government, and breach of trust.

These charges are connected to a $90,000 payment he received from the prime minister's former chief of staff, Nigel Wright.

This was to repay expenses for claiming a primary residence in Prince Edward Island while Duffy reportedly lived in Ottawa.

Wright has not been charged in connection with the payment.

In addition, Duffy has been charged with five other counts of fraud under $5,000, four counts of fraud over $5,000, and nine counts of breach of trust in connection with filing expense claims unrelated to his role as a senator.

There are also two counts of fraud over $5,000, two counts of fraud under $5,000, and four counts of breach of trust linked to the awarding of consulting contracts. The total amount of fraud in these instances allegedly tops $60,000, according to the Mounties.

Duffy is expected to appear in court on September 14.

The charges come shortly after Maclean's magazine published claims by a Peruvian woman that she's Duffy's love child.

When so called journalists embed themselves up to their armpits in right wing spin doctoring, then enter politics, we have to ask ourselves if we really have a democracy anymore given that right wing interests control most mass media in Canada?

Among an extremely long list of outrages perpetrated on Canadians by the Harper government is the neutering of the CBC. Appointing a Conservative hack spin doctor as CBC Ombudsman is just one of the ways that the CBC is being undermined. Now this HarperCon hack spin doctor wants to be mayor of Vancouver.
