All four Vision Vancouver trustees appear ready to be fired by the provincial government.

The party issued a statement today saying that this evening, chair Mike Lombardi, Joy Alexander, Patti Bacchus, and Allan Wong will vote against staff proposals to address a $24-million shortfall.

“We have heard from our partner groups, parents, students and members of the public that it’s is time to unite and stand up and say ‘no’ to further cuts to public schools,” Bacchus said in a Vision Vancouver news release.

The Vision trustees say they "invite" Green and NPA trustees to also reject the budget.

There are nine trustees in Vancouver: four Vision, four NPA, and one Green.

The staff proposals call for, among other cuts, the elimination of the band and strings program in 44 schools. There are also recommendations for a reduction in the number of secondary teachers, layoffs of two multiculturalism liaison workers, and the elimination of antihomophobia and antiracism mentors.

Under provincial law, school boards are required to balance the budget.

In 1985 when the Vancouver school board refused to implement cuts to balance the budget, the Socred government fired all the trustees, replacing them with an administrator.
