Pacific National Exhibition will ask public about changing date of annual fair in Hastings Park

Organizers of one of Vancouver's signature events are looking into making a significant change. And it's all due to changing weather patterns.

The Fair at the PNE traditionally occurs over a 17-day window in Hastings Park, ending on the Labour Day weekend.

But now, the Pacific National Exhibition is going to poll British Columbians to determine if they support holding the annual event in July.

“This is some very preliminary research on a concept that we as an organization have been considering for close to a decade,” PNE spokesperson Laura Ballance said in a news release. “The fact is, the weather patterns are changing and over the past 25 years, late August is consistently receiving more rain and experiencing cooler temperatures. Our long-standing tradition that has us ending on Labour Day may no longer make sense from a weather perspective."

The change in the dates couldn't occur before 2018—and this decision won't happen before polling is completed.

"We know that the Fair is a beloved event for thousands of families, so we’re going to talk to British Columbians about what they feel the impact of moving the Fair into a July window would be,” Ballance added.

The City of Vancouver owns the Pacific National Exhibition. It receives no public subsidy and rents several venues, including the Pacific Coliseum, and operates Playland. The Fair at the PNE is the largest employer of youth in the province.

“The 2015 Fair is a great example of why we are considering moving our dates,” Ballance said. “We started with our strongest four days in over a decade and then adverse weather resulted in a 10 percent attendance decline by the end of Labour Day.”
