A rally in support of Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip is planned for Saturday, August 2, on the south side of the Vancouver Art Gallery at Hornby and Robson streets.

The event is scheduled for 2 p.m. It will be the third of its kind since Israel launched an attack on the Palestinian territory on July 8.

The Canada Palestine Association is one of the groups supporting the demonstration. In a telephone interview, chairperson Hanna Kawas said another rally is needed because the conflict is intensifying.

“It is getting much worse,” he told the Straight. “They are trying to demolish Gaza. Whole blocks are being destroyed.”

According to BBC News, as of July 29, more than 1,200 Palestinians had been killed and some 6,700 injured since the war began. Fifty-three Israeli soldiers and two Israeli civilians have also died in the fighting.

Kawas noted that the United Nations has estimated that 80 percent of the Palestinians killed were civilians.

On July 28, B.C. Premier Christy Clark issued a statement that expressed her strong support for Israel. “Israel has the right to defend itself and its citizens against terrorist attacks,” she said.

      end the conflict

      Jul 29, 2014 at 8:21pm

The conflict ends as soon as law enforcement by the "government" in the territory from which Hamas is launching rockets starts. If a "government" is incapable of preventing militants from launching rockets from its territory, it is essentially a failed state, and really should probably be annexed by a foreign power capable of enforcing the law w.r.t. rockets. The non-israeli population in the area must decide what it hates more: Israel or having Israel act of necessity. Their current course of action seems to force Israel's hand every now and again.

If a Government is incapable of preventing militants from Assaulting Palestinians, Confiscating their Land and Holding them in Ghetto Living Conditions for 40 years - It should be Annexed by a Foreign Power - or say Just Given Back to the People who have been living there for 1,400 years.

And that is all there is to this story.

Actually Jews lived in the area for over 5000 years!
And I believe it was part of the Roman Empire for a while too. Should it be given back to the Italians? (they are Romans' descendants)
Stop being selective with your history.

My question is WHY IS THE GEORGIA STRAIGHT SPONSORING CLEAR ANTI-ISRAEL PROPAGANDA?!!
Why are there no signs saying, "Stop Hamas?"
Educate yourselves before pointing a finger at little Israel who is defending itself from a maniac, terrorist government of Hamas whose goal is not just to destroy Israel, but ultimately to control by force the whole Western World just like what is happening in Iraq right now with extremist movement ISIS. Hamas is just another ISIS.
