Water restrictions taking effect across Metro Vancouver two weeks early this year

Summer doesn’t officially begin until June 20, but water restrictions are already coming into effect across Metro Vancouver.

As of this Sunday (May 15), Lower Mainland residents are asked to adhere to stage 1 regulations.

That means people can still water their lawns and gardens, but only on certain days.

Here’s how Metro Vancouver describes the rules:

      Residential lawn sprinkling allowed:
      Even-numbered addresses Monday, Wednesday, Saturday mornings 4 a.m. to 9 a.m.
      Odd-numbered addresses Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday mornings 4 a.m. to 9 a.m.

      Non-residential lawn sprinkling allowed:
      Even-numbered addresses Monday, Wednesday mornings 1 a.m. to 6 a.m.
      Odd-numbered addresses Tuesday, Thursday mornings 1 a.m. to 6 a.m.

      All non-residential addresses Friday mornings, 4 a.m. to 9 a.m.

It’s noted there that all a lawn really needs to stay healthy is one hour of watering per week.

In addition, people washing their cars or a boat should use a hose with a spring-loaded shut off.

The regional governing body has introduced water restrictions for 2016 two weeks earlier than it did in 2015. They will also last two weeks longer than in previous years, to October 15, covering a full five months of the year.

In 2015, dry conditions through the summer prompted Metro Vancouver to impose stage 3 restrictions beginning in July.
