Burnaby RCMP say a woman was allegedly stabbed in the leg with a needle by a man in an "unprovoked assault" at a busy intersection.

According to a news release issued August 12, the woman was at Kingsway and McKay Avenue on August 8 around 10:20 a.m. when the incident occurred.

"While the nature of this incident is a significant concern for police, it is also highly unusual. As of today, we've had no other reported incidents ," Inspector Bob Page, an investigative services officer, said in the release.

The release states that "the victim was walking eastbound on the south side of Kingsway and was stopped at a light at McKay Avenue when a man stood beside her and allegedly stabbed her leg with a needle".

The woman was treated at hospital and later released.
