A former journalist with CKNW and the Victoria Times Colonist is the new managing director of public affairs at UBC.

Susan Danard takes over the job today (September 2) from the retiring Lucie McNeill, who held the post since 2011.

“Ms. Danard has the right qualities and experience to strategically build awareness of UBC’s extraordinary research, teaching and community service initiatives,” Pascal Spothelfer, UBC's vice president for communications and community partnership, stated in a news release.

While Danard was a news reporter for 15 years in B.C. and Ontario, she has worked in media relations and communications roles at TransLink and B.C. Hydro since 2004.

Danard is the chair of the advisory council of Royal Roads University’s school of communication and culture.

She takes on her new job about a year after UBC was rocked by a string of sexual assaults as well as sexist and racist chants during frosh activities.
