Although summer has only just begun, B.C.'s forestry ministry announced today (June 28) that part of Vancouver Island has already hit the highest level of drought conditions.

Due to low rainfall and record-breaking temperatures, southeastern Vancouver Island has been declared in a Level 4 drought alert, which is listed as "extremely dry" conditions.

The area extends from the area around Campbell River and the Discovery Islands down the east coast of the island to its southern tip, which includes Victoria, Sooke, and Port Renfrew.

All residents, including farmers, industry, and municipalities, are being urged to reduce water consumption as much as possible.

The rest of Vancouver Island, which includes regions north of Campbell River and the island's west coast, have a Level 3 (or "very dry" conditions) drought rating, which means water use should be limited.

The B.C. government is closing freshwater sports fishing across the southern part of the island, starting on Friday (July 1), and the closure will remain in place until drought conditions improve.
