Expect traffic delays on major Vancouver route to UBC's Point Grey campus

The city also plans to extend a protected bike route up part of Burrard Street

A major city infrastructure project is going to result in a four-week closure of part of West 12th Avenue.

It's one of the major thoroughfares to UBC's Point Grey campus.

The section between Arbutus and Fir streets will be shut down starting in late July.

In a notice sent to area residents, the city stated: "The road closure is necessary due to Sewer construction at the intersection of Burrard St. and West 12th Ave. This work is part of a larger Burrard St. infrastructure upgrade project, including Burrard Bridge rehabilitation."

Local traffic will still be able to travel to all streets and lanes, including West 12th Avenue, except where it's blocked by construction.

Currently, Burrard Street is closed south of West Broadway for the Burrard Street infrastructure project. Heavy equipment has been used to dig a large trench in the area.

This has resulted in a detour for cyclists on the West 10th Avenue bikeway. Now, they're taking a detour along West 11th Avenue to cross Burrard Street.

Protected bike route coming for cyclists

Meanwhile, the city has also told businesses in the area that there will be changes to Burrard Street between West 7th and West 10th avenues.

These include wider sidewalks and crosswalks, as well as a new southbound protected bike lane along Burrard from West 1st Avenue to West 7th Avenue. Cyclists already have a protected bikeway from the Burrard Bridge to West 1st Avenue.

The extension will enable cyclists travelling from the Burrard Bridge to connect to the West 7th Avenue bikeway without needing to detour up bike routes along Pine or Cypress streets. It reflects the city's philosophy of using space on arterial roads to facilitate the movement of cyclists.

In the 1990s through to the first part of the 2000s, transportation planners promoted cycling on nonarterial streets.

The city also plans to put full-time on-street parking on one side of Burrard Street.

In addition, the city plans on prohibiting left turns off Burrard going east on West 7th Avenue. Motorists will also be banned from turning off Burrard onto West 10th Avenue. And eastbound motor vehicles on West 7th and West 10th will be prohibited from turning left onto Burrard.

According to the city, these changes "will make bicycle crossings safer by separating bicycle traffic from turning motor vehicles" on the West 7th and West 10th bikeways.

"Coordinating repaving, sidewalk reconstruction, and these improvements allow the City to minimize costs and reduce disruptions," the city stated.
