Vancouver park board staff have recommended naming two baseball fields on the East Side after a long-time community volunteer.

Richard Saunders is a former president of the Hastings Community Little League and has been involved in the sport for more than three decades.

According to a report going to the board tonight, Saunders helped raise more than $300,000 for field renovations so that Hastings Community Little League can host next month's national championship tournament.

If commissioners vote in favour of the staff recommendation, the 64-year-old baseball diamonds at Hastings Community Park will be called Richards Saunders Field.

Saunders remains on the board of Hastings Community Little League and is chairing the 2016 Canadian Little League Championship tournament, which runs from August 4 to August 13.

As president of Hastings Community Little League from 1999 to 2008, Saunders brought in a batting cage, an electronic scoreboard, a concession stand, extended dugouts on the main field, and new dugouts to the T-ball diamond.

Tonight, the park board will also vote on a staff recommendation to initiate naming processes for parks at the corner of Main Street and East 18th Avenue and at Yukon Street and West 17th Avenue.

So far, there is nothing in Vancouver named after the city's longest-serving local politician, former NPA park commissioner and councillor George Puil.

Puil sat on the park board from 1962 to 1974, filling the role as chair for three years. He was first elected to Vancouver city council in 1976 and remained in office until 2002.

He was the first chairman of TransLink and also chaired Metro Vancouver, which was then known as the Greater Vancouver Regional District.

George Puil served 26 years on council and 12 years on the park board.
