While local weather has drawn hikers out to trails and the mountains, two major injuries and a fatality, all on August 7, serve as a reminder of the hazards that exist and the importance of taking precautions.

A seven-year-old boy fell 15 metres down a rocky embankment in Lighthouse Park in West Vancouver around 1 p.m. on August 7.

Firefighters had to rappel down the cliff and called the Canadian Coast Guard to transport him to paramedics on one of their vessels. He was taken to hospital in serious condition.

On the same day, North Shore Rescue located and rescued a 58-year-old diabetic hiker who was experiencing severe leg cramps on Coliseum Mountain. He and his daughter were airlifted out and taken to Lions Gate Hospital for medical care.

Meanwhile, the B.C. Coroners Service announced that a hiker died near Squamish also on August 7. She was on a trail beyond the Sea-to-Sky Gondola when she lost her footing and fell 20 metres.

Her name has not been released yet.
