Vancouver school officials are assessing whether students can attend Sir Guy Carleton elementary school in September following a serious fire last night.

"If it is determined that students and staff need to be moved, the district will work quickly to make alternative arrangements and to communicate those arrangements to parents," the Vancouver school board said in a statement on its website.

The statement expressed gratitude to Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services efforts to contain the fire. The board also noted there were "no reports of staff or students being on site when the fire started".

Sir Guy Carleton is on the southwest corner of Kingsway and Joyce and has been included on a preliminary list of 12 Vancouver schools that could be closed.

Parents and Vancouver-Kingsway NDP MLA Adrian Dix have mounted a vigorous campaign to save the school.

Earlier this month, NDP MLA Adrian Dix gathered with parents and children outside Sir Guy Carleton elementary school.

It's an A-listed heritage building and opened as a one-room schoolhouse in 1896, making it the oldest school in the province.

n 2010, Carleton was also on a list of five East Vancouver schools slated for closure. However, a groundswell of community support for the school convinced trustees to keep it open.
