An influential labour group has recommended that incumbent mayors be dumped in New Westminster and Port Moody.

In its list of endorsements, the New Westminster and District Labour Council has recommended the challenger in New Westminster, Coun. Jonathan X. Cote, against mayor Wayne Wright.

Cote, an insurance adjuster, topped the polls in the 2011 vote for council and chairs the parks and recreation committee and cochairs the master transportation committee.

Wright, a businessman, has held office since winning the mayor's chair in 2002.

For council in New Westminster, the labour group has recommended incumbents Bill Harper, Jamie McEvoy, Lorrie Williams, and Chuck Puchmayr, as well as Patrick Johnstone and Mary Trentadue (a former City of North Vancouver councillor).

Meanwhile in Port Moody, the labour council has endorsed Gaetan Royer, a former city manager who's challenging the incumbent, Mike Clay.

Royer's wife Zoe also received an endorsement in her bid for reelection to Port Moody city council, as did Coun. Rick Glumac, Barbara Junker, and Anne Ladouceur.

In Surrey, the council has recommended Coun. Barinder Rasode against former mayor Doug McCallum and Coun. Linda Hepner in the race to succeed the outgoing mayor, Dianne Watts.

The only Surrey councillor who received an endorsement for reelection was Judy Villeneuve. The NWDLC also recommended Martin Rooney and Vera LeFranc.

Meanwhile in Burnaby, the council has endorsed the entire Burnaby Citizens Association slate, which is headed by Mayor Derek Corrigan.

The Vancouver and District Labour Council has recommended Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson for reelection along with his Vision Vancouver colleagues.

The only Coalition of Progressive Electors candidate to get a nod is Anita Romaniuk, who is running for the Vancouver park board.

The VDLC has also endorsed Jane Bouey and Gwen Giesbrecht, who are running for school trustee with a new party called the Public Education Project.

OneCity council candidate RJ Aquino also received the VLDC's stamp of approval.

Pretty sure the VDLC also endorsed COPE's Gayle Gavin.

Well, it's the same ossified, rarified labour leadership we have but at least we have them. They do know who their enemies are - the NPA, which showed nothing but contempt for working people in general, the Greens with their fanatacism, stupidity but the VDLC slate itself seems irrelevant after being a shill for Vision in the past two elections.

I should add my acknowledgement and gratitude for their previous endorsements and financing to COPE. Still, my point is ... Do we think the VDLC slate relevant? To how many?

Guess the labour council didn't talk to the local union at Port Moody about Royer's term as manager.
