Firefighters contain three-alarm fire at Ross Street Sikh temple in South Vancouver
This morning, a fire broke out in Vancouver's most famous gurdwara.
Nobody was injured in the three-alarm blaze in the Ross Street Sikh temple, which is near the corner of Ross Street and Southeast Marine Drive in Vancouver.
Investigators still haven't determined the cause of the fire, which was concentrated on the second floor on the south side of the temple.
The holy books and religious artifacts are kept overnight on the north side, so it's believed that they have not been damaged.
The gurdwara is operated by the Khalsa Diwan Society, which puts on the annual Vaisakhi parade every April in South Vancouver.
Its first temple opened on West 2nd Avenue in 1908; the Ross Street gurdwara opened in 1970.
In addition to being a place of worship, the gurdwara is a major social and educational centre, offering Punjabi language classes, computer training, and youth programs.
