New York–based  Capital  has reported that the Metro commuter papers in the U.S. have further centralized editorial control, which has meant the loss of city editors in New York City, Boston, and Philadelphia.

Capital obtained a memo from Metro's Yggers Mortensen, who wrote that he "made the difficult but necessary decision to replace some of our functional editors with one national editor".

In addition, a features editor and an editor–copy chief have also been laid off, according to Capital.

The new national editor is Peter Green, who used to work for Bloomberg.

Metro International is 98 percent owned by AB Kinnevik, a Swedish company with "significant stakes" in more than 50 companies operating in more than 80 countries.

Metro's Canadian papers are controlled by a Torstar subsidiary, Star Media Group, which publishes Metro papers in eight cities, including Vancouver.

In July, Star Media Group shut down Metro papers in Regina, Saskatoon, and London, Ontario, resulting in the loss of 25 jobs.
