Investigators are looking into a fatal police shooting of a 51-year-old man near the corner of East 41st Avenue and Knight Street in Vancouver.

According to a news release issued by the Independent Investigations Office of B.C., Vancouver police responded to a complaint in the area around 5 p.m. on November 22.

"They encountered a male who appeared to be in distress," the IIO stated. "The male allegedly did not follow directions from police."

Meanwhile, Vancouver police issued a statement saying the man was "shouting and waving a 2X4 around".

"Officers deployed less-lethal bean bag rounds in an attempt to disarm him and take him safely into custody, but eventually the man was shot," the VPD stated. "He was rushed to hospital, but did not survive."

It sounds like a cop-assisted suicide but even though a few bean bags didn't do the trick, they should've just kept firing them or used tasers etc. Shooting should not have been an option unless he had a gun or something like a machete. As far as I know he never attacked a single person nor even attempted to.

Deranged 51 year-old man shot dead for swinging a 2x4 in the middle of an intersection?!? This is bad policing and no amount of VPD rationalizing will convince me otherwise. What is take-down training for, if 3 cops can't find a way to deal with a middle-aged guy with a piece of lumber?
