Conservative MP Nina Grewal’s son seeks nomination in Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon

Liv Grewal’s role model is his well-known mom. If he succeeds with his plan, he’ll join her at work next year.

Grewal’s mother happens to be Nina Grewal, who is the Conservative MP for Fleetwood-Port Kells in Surrey.

The young Grewal is seeking the Conservative party’s nomination in Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon. It’s a new riding in the Fraser Valley.

If he wins the nomination and eventually triumphs in the 2015 federal election, it will be the first time that a mother-and-son combination will sit at the same time at the House of Commons.

“My mom has always been a great role model, so I’m looking forward to that experience if I’m given the opportunity by my constituents,” Grewal said when reached by phone by the Straight today (December 18).

It won’t be the first time that the Grewal family is going to write a piece of Canadian political history.

In 2004, Grewal’s mom Nina joined her experienced husband Gurmant in Parliament. Grewal’s father was elected in that year as Conservative MP for Newton-North Delta. Before this riding, Gurmant was MP for two terms in Surrey Central. He did not seek re-election in 2006, while his wife defended her seat that year as well as in 2008 and 2011.

There was actually a chance that the Conservatives would have had the three Grewals in Parliament.

Gurmant had planned a comeback in the new riding of Cloverdale-Langley City. However, he wasn’t allowed by the party to run in the nomination.

No reason has been publicly offered as to why Gurmant was blocked from the Cloverdale-Langley City nomination held last month. The contest was won by former Langley Township councillor Dean Drysdale, whose opponents included former B.C. Liberal MLA Dave Hayer.

Going back to Liv Grewal, the Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon nomination hasn’t been set by the Conservative Party.

“My sign-up is going really well,” Grewal said in the phone interview. “I’m getting a very positive response from the community.”

Grewal is a resident of Abbotsford, which forms part of the new riding.

Grewal completed a bachelor of arts degree at SFU. He went on to get a master of science in public management and governance at the London School of Economics.

Grewal interned at the office of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, where he helped out in strategic communications.

He went to the London School of Economics and he's a PC. Good luck. Sorry to tell him he's not going to make this time we have a barrel full of Management graduate in Abbotsford.

The family are the worst kind of politicians out there. Nina had highest spending in family travel expenses - some seem to have spent on her family's flights to London. There is a reason the disgraced father is not in the nomination picture, he was barred from running election in Surrey.

"Grewal is a resident of Abbotsford, which forms part of the new riding." Since when? Yesterday?

Enough is enough. The Grewal family need to take a back seat. Mrs grewal will never be a cabinet minister, let alone a parliamentary secretary. Mr. Grewal is never allowed to run for the conservatives. And now the son wants to run. This is nepotism.

Mr. Grewal characterization of his nomination candidacy in Mission Matsqui Fraser Canyon is fraught with ambiguity. It would be interesting to have the Conservation Party of Canada National Council investigate the efficacy of his alleged supporters to ensure compliance with membership regulations. Mr. Grewal's father, Gurmant, recently was disqualified from the nomination contest in Langley Cloverdale. Gurmant is now actively campaigning for his son in Mission Matsqui Fraser Canyon.

Ms. Grewal has good constituency staff in place and serves well in that way but as far as being a legislator, I really cannot think of a single initiative she has come up with. She and the other career politicians are precisely what is wrong with Canadian politics and why we need a two term limit on all MPs. We are basically stuck with a house full of no new ideas or people because these people who have never had real jobs do anything to hold on to their paycheques. This is how you end up with a country that is not moving forward and meeting the challenges of the changing world. Very few thinkers in the House these days and the Senate, they are useless as ever

Duly noted for when the Conservatives start crapping on Trudeau for sharing a name with his father.
