The Non-Partisan Association has publicly responded to a defamation lawsuit filed by former school trustees Ken Denike and Sophia Woo against the party and councillor Elizabeth Ball.

In a statement released today (December 22), the NPA said that it will “vigorously defend” itself and Ball, and the party “stands by” its caucus’s decision to expel Denike and Woo.

On December 17, Denike and Woo filed a claim in B.C. Supreme Court arguing that they were “by way of innuendo” intimated to be homophobes and intolerant of LGBTQ+ communities.

Denike and Woo were booted from the NPA after they held a June 13 news conference about concerns related to updates to the Vancouver school board’s sexual orientation and gender identities policy.

“Denike and Woo were formally expelled from the NPA caucus last June following numerous instances of disregard for the NPA’s caucus code of conduct; a code of conduct previously agreed to and signed by all members of the Caucus,” the NPA stated today.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.

The NPA is also dealing with a defamation lawsuit filed by Vision Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson and councillor Geoff Meggs against the party and its former mayoral candidate, Kirk LaPointe.
