The latest expense scandal involving the Trudeau government has taken an unexpected turn.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's chief of staff, Katie Telford, and principal secretary, Gerald Butts, have promised to pay back part of their moving expenses to the government.

Earlier this week, opposition MPs raised a ruckus in Parliament over more than $200,000 in expenses that the pair charged for relocating to Ottawa.

On Facebook today, they outlined the general nature of these costs before stating that they would reimburse what they characterized as a "personalized cash payout" of $23,373.71 for Telford and $20,799.10 for Butts.

The defined these personalized cash payouts as "miscellaneous moving expenses".

They won't reimburse the government for "moving logistics" of $10,735.50 for Telford and $14,636.39 for Butts.

However, Butts pledged to reimburse the land-transfer tax for his new home "over and above what would have been the cost of the tax on a home at the average house price in Ottawa for 2016".

"As this process relates to us, we were eligible to be reimbursed for a bunch of costs that we don't feel comfortable about," Telford and Butts stated. "While the rules were clear and we followed them, we both know that's not always enough."

      Here's a breakdown of Telford's initial expenses:

      Moving logistics: $10,735.50

Real estate commission, fees, and employer taxes: $44,149.40

Personalized cash payout and incidentals: $23,373.71

      Administration fees: $1,577.94

      Travel: $546

      Here's a breakdown of Butts's initial expenses:

      Moving logistics: $14,636.39

Real estate commission, fees, and employer taxes: $47,103.56

Pesonalized cash payout and incidentals: $20,799.10

Land transfer tax, legal fees, and insurance: $25,141.31

      Temporary rental lodging (apartment): $18,247.60

      Administration fees: $468.80

      Travel: $273

"These kind of breakdowns have never been released before," Telford and Butts stated. "As leaders of the government's exempt staff, we take responsibility for this policy. We will not be asking the same reimbursements of other exempt staff, nor will we call on members of the previous government to do the same."
