Three police forces in Ontario held a news conference this morning to announce criminal charges in connection with eight deaths in care homes.

The Ontario Provincial Police and law-enforcement officials in the Ontario communities of Woodstock and London allege that a former nurse, Elizabeth Tracy Mae Wettlaufer, drugged elderly patients between 75 and 96 years old between 2007 and 2014.

She faces eight counts of first-degree murder.

Wettlaufer, 49, previously worked for Caressant Care Nursing and Retirement Homes.

The company has issued a statement saying she ceased to be an employee two-and-a-half years ago.
