Japan's Fukushima region hit by 6.9-magnitude earthquake with tsunami warning

      An earthquake with a preliminary 7.3-magnitude measurement struck off the coast of Fukushima prefecture in Japan.

      According the Japan Meteorological Agency, it struck around 6 a.m. (Japan Standard Time) at 37.3° N, 141.6° E, and at a depth of 10 kilometres.

      The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting it as a 6.9-magnitude quake.

      Three other quakes, at 5.4-, 5.5-, and 4.9-magnitudes, followed afterward in the area.

      Tsunami warnings of up to 3 metres (10 feet) were issued along Japan's Pacific coast, including including Aomore, Iwate, Ibaraki and Chiba prefectures.

      A tsunami of 60 centimetres (2 feet) reached Onahama Port in Fukushima.

      Fukushima is the site of a nuclear reactor damaged during the 2011 Tohoku 9.1-magnitude earthquake and tsunami.

      The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre is not issuing an alert for North America's West Coast.
