Homeless people can spend the night in two "warming centres" to avoid the latest cold snap.

The City of Vancouver has announced it will open the doors to the Creekside Community Centre and at the Hall at 1739 Venables Street from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. on Friday (December 23), Saturday (December 24), and Sunday (December 25).

Christmas Day is particularly tough on homeless people because public buildings like libraries and community centres, along with many businesses, are closed.

The city stated in a news release that there are 956 permanent shelter beds within its boundaries, along with 195 temporary winter shelter beds and up to 234 in extreme weather.

Anyone seeking space can dial 2-1-1 to check availability.
