A police car chase ended in a crash at Granville Street at West 16th Avenue that shut down traffic this morning (January 13).

Around 4 a.m., Vancouver police responded to a call from the owner of a pickup truck who reported that he witnessed someone stealing his vehicle near Burrard and Harwood streets in the West End.

Police located the truck and followed it southbound over the Burrard Bridge. According to News 1130, when the driver of the stolen vehicle noticed that police were following him, he accelerated. When he ran through a red light at the intersection of Granville Street and West 16th Avenue, he crashed into an SUV.

In an attempt to escape, he ran into a tree whereupon police pinned him in with their cars. Two police cruisers were damaged when the driver tried to ram the police cars.

The driver fled on foot and was later caught by the VPD K-9 unit and arrested.

A passenger in the stolen truck was taken into custody after being treated for injuries.

The SUV driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The intersection at Granville and West 16th was closed this morning as police continued their investigation into the incident.
