Freezing rain overnight has created treacherous road conditions in the eastern part of the Fraser Valley.

Police are advising motorists to avoid Highway 1 between Langley and Hope.

Poor road conditions have led to the closure of public schools in Surrey, Chilliwack, Abbotsford, and Mission.

Douglas College, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, and University of the Fraser Valley are also closed this morning.

There are 14,000 students who take credit courses at Douglas College and another 10,000 who take noncredit courses.

More than 19,000 students attend KPU and 9,514 enrolled at University of the Fraser Valley last fall.

UBC, SFU, the B.C. Institute of Technology, Vancouver Community College, and Langara College campuses remain open.

Capilano University's North Vancouver campus is open but officials are still assessing conditions at Cap U's Sunshine Coast/kalax-ay campus.
