In an era when broadcasters are replaced with alarming rapidity, Andy Walsh has been a fixture on the Vancouver airwaves.

But this morning marked his final broadcast on News 1130 after 65 years in the business.

Walsh, 85, launched his career in 1951 in Cornwall, Ontario. He later worked in his hometown of Montreal for 15 years before moving to Vancouver in the early 1970s, joining CHQM.

Walsh was hired by News 1130 in the 1990s when it converted to an all-news station, and remained there until today.

He ended his career as the weekend morning anchor.

What set him apart from many radio newscasters was his voice.

"As far as a set of broadcast pipes go, Walsh possesses one of the smoothest and most mellifluous in the industry," Vancouver broadcaster Joe Leary once wrote. "In fact, it could be said that when Andy Walsh speaks, the words lie in state."
