It was a tennis upset that's being talked about on several continents.

On Saturday (March 11), Vancouver's Vasek Pospisil, the 129th ranked men's player on the ATP World Tour, defeated the world's top-ranked men's player, Britain's Andy Murray, to advance at the BNP Parabis Open.

Afterward, Pospisil said "it's an incredible feeling" beating Murray, who was heavily favoured in the match, which took place in Indian Wells, California.

"If I pick a handful of great moments in my career, this is definitely one of them," Pospisil,26, said. "To beat the No. 1 player and somebody as accomplished as Andy, one of the greats of the game, is amazing."

Pospisil, who was born in Vernon, said he wanted to mix things up so the 29-year-old Murray wouldn't "hit a groove and know what I was going to be doing".

The Vancouver player is ranked Number 2 among Canadian men behind Milos Raonic but most of his professional success has come in doubles play.

On Saturday, Pospisil broke Murray's serve four times on the way to a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) win. The match lasted one hour and 50 minutes.

“He was maybe a bit more solid from the back, a bit more consistent from the back of the court," Murray said. “That...gives you more opportunities to come to the net. If you’re making mistakes in the first three, four shots of the rally, it’s not easy to come in on the correct ball. When you’re a little bit more solid, you can be patient and wait for the right shot to come in on.”
